Choosing a licensed UK casino without getting lost in the offer
Last updated: 19 July 2026 · Evergreen guide
Golden Crown Wi compares operators; we do not run one. Always confirm the UKGC licence on the Commission’s public register before you register.
1. Licence first
A UK Gambling Commission licence is the baseline for anyone playing from Great Britain. The operator should show a licence number and you should be able to find the same entry on gamblingcommission.gov.uk. No licence, no place on our list.
2. Offer type, not headline size
Welcome packages usually fall into a few buckets: matched deposits, free spins, a mix of both, or brands that keep promotions light (MrQ is a familiar example of the last camp). A spins-led package like those often used by NYSpins can look gentler than a big cash match — until you read eligible games and wagering on winnings.
Ask three boring questions: What product does the offer attach to? What is the playthrough multiplier? Which games contribute 100%, and which contribute less or nothing?
3. Wagering and game weighting
UK terms must be clear, but “clear” still takes a careful read. Hybrid brands such as Lotto Mart or Lottoland may run lottery promotions beside casino credits — those rulebooks are not interchangeable. If the casino T&Cs bury contribution tables, treat that as a usability problem, not a footnote.
4. Games and live casino
If you care about live dealer tables, check for Evolution or similar studios and how many blackjack/roulette variants sit in the lobby. Large Flutter brands such as Paddy Power typically carry deeper live floors than smaller spin-led sites. Slots catalogues should list recognisable studios — NetEnt, Play’n GO, Pragmatic Play and peers — rather than anonymous filler.
5. Mobile and support
Open the site on your phone before you commit. Look for a stable lobby, readable terms pages, and a support entry point (live chat is still the practical standard). You will not need our help desk for account issues; you will need theirs.
6. Safer play tools
Deposit limits, reality checks, time-outs and self-exclusion should be easy to find. If you need a hard stop across the UK market, register with GamStop before or instead of shopping for another brand. More detail sits on our safer gambling tools page.
Quick cross-check: After you shortlist, open our homepage comparison table and the per-operator scorecards. Grades are editorial opinions weighted toward offer clarity — use them as a second opinion, not a command.
